About travelling to Austin this Saturday; what about the Hurricane

Travelling to Austin this Saturday; what about the Hurricane?
Hi there, I'm a first time flyer and everything seems to be going wrong! I'm due to fly from England to Austin, via Houston this Saturday, and will be arriving around 2pm (local time) in Houston, going onto Austin at about 4pm. I was just wondering how this would affect my travel? As you can understand, being from England where the most extreme weather we have is 'heavy rain', the word hurricane sends me into a panic.

You won't be flying to houston saturday. That's the day it's supposed to hit. Sorry to tell you that. I actually live southeast Houston.

If the storm is believed to be on ground in Houston when your plane is to arrive, your flight will most likely be canceled. They don't land in the middle of a storm, so it will either be canceled or if you are already in air, diverted to another airport. You will probably be one day behind. Right now it really depends on how fast and what direction the storm progresses in, but I wouldn't worry about it. At worst, you'll be postponed, but you won't be in any danger, airlines don't really take chances like that. If Austin gets a lot of rain, be prepared to hit up the Barton Springs Greenbelt when you get here!

Hurricane Ike is projected to make Texas landfall between Galveston and Port Lavaca. This places Houston on the side of the hurricane with the most damaging winds. Expect flooding in Austin and a one or two day delay should be anticipated. Houston and its airport will be underwater if Houston sustains more than 5.2 inches of rain which looks more and more likely. Austin looks like we will be on the weak side of the storm which means we get a bunch of rain (which we need). But just east of Austin and over to Louisiana could have lots of flooding, winds. Wait until Friday morning to see what they are projecting, should be pretty accurate 24-36 hours outside landfall. Here is a local weather station you can check - www.kvue.com/weather - click on the KVUE Storm Team forecast button for latest info. If you're stopping or connecting between England and Houston you may want to consider making reservations in a hotel near the airport so you don't have to stay in the airport for what ever delays Ike causes. Check with your airline to see what their plans are, and if you can make changes on your flights. Also be aware that lots of people have been evacuated from the Gulf coast. Hotels all over the state get real busy. Also, Texas has a very good Hurricane preparedness plan, we've had a lot of them. Like "squirrel" says, you're gonna want to get outside if we get some rain from IKE, should cool the weather off, and put Austin in a good mood after a long hot summer! Be sure to enjoy some Texas BBQ while you're here, just ask ANY local were the best BBQ is for recommendations on where to go. Good luck, either way it goes, it will be a memorable trip! Keep your fingers crossed IKE turns out to be a pussycat and nobody gets hurt. Barbara Lynne

If I were you, I would strongly consider having the flight changed to something that does not go through Houston. First of all, Austin-Bergstrom is an international airport so I think you might be able to catch a direct flight. If you can't, try rescheduling to connect through Dallas or maybe even Atlanta.
5 :
Your plane won't be going to Houston. It may go somewhere else (that is, if it is not canceled), but all will be fine in Austin if you can get here some other way.

You can take the Greyhound Bus, its cheaper and not very far to go. A plane would cost to much. Have fun!!
2 :
Bus.

I would pay a bit extra and take the Amtrak. The greyhound might be a bit cheaper, but you truly ride with the scum of the earth in those busses, they are very tight, people sneak animals on and even put their luggage in garbage bags. The Amtrak is comfortable, you get to see the landscape, and you can walk around and sit in the dining car if you want.

About travel between Austin and San Antonio - how do I do it

Travel between Austin and San Antonio - how do I do it!?
I'm going to San Antonio this weekend for my friend's baby shower. She just called me and told me that she may be delivering early because she has begun to dilate. Her boyfriend is working on Friday and may not be able to take off. There really isn't anyone else to pick me up from the Austin airport (flying to Austin is cheaper). How can I get from Austin to San Antonio in the fastest and cheapest way? I do have some options: Call this guy who I used to date who is now at Ft. Hood in Killeen to come pick me up and take me to San Antonio. But, he may be working when i get in (12:30pm on Friday) and I really don't want to see him during this time. Rent a car for a day to drive from the airport to San Antonio. But, I don't want to have to pay to rent a car. Have the boyfriend miss a day of work. ????? Please let me know what you think, especially those that are in the area and know other ways..such as train or bus?

Contact Greyhound. San Antonio and Austin aren't THAT far apart.
2 :
Take the bus, from Austin to San Antonio is about an hour, at the most, or get someone to drive you..... good luck.
3 :
Tell your BF your dillema and how important this is to you and hopefully he will offer -- but don't ask. Otherwise you really need to rent a car.

Its not too far away so renting a car is a good idea.
2 :
its about a 2.5 hour drive
3 :
Miles - 200 ish Takes - 2 hours Bus is good if you find transportation once you get there but with your own rent car you can tour the city and all of it's site in and aroubd Austin, great place to be.
4 :
it's real aesy to hitch-hike between there and there!
5 :
About 300, depend on Houston's location where you live. Rent car is a good recommendation. Austin is not like NYC.
6 :
def rent a car it is about a 210 mile drive no bus service i dont think take 290 all the way baby
7 :
It is 160 miles downtown Austin to downtown Houston. It is about a 2 1/2 hour drive. With the traffic in Austin being as bad or worse than Houston, I travel to Austin by different routes depending on where in Austin I need to be. If I need to be on the north side of Austin, I will take 290 all the way. If I need to be on the south side of Austin, I will take I-10 to Columbus and I will take 71 into Austin. I-35 is under constant construction in Austin. If you take 290 all the way and you have to be south of downtown, you can add 1 hour to your trip. It really depends on what you want to do in Austin to decide on whether or not to take a bus or rent a car. If you have a lot of places you want to visit in Austin, you should rent a car. If you are only going one place, the bus might be a good answer.
8 :
Southwest offers flights for $29 each way......can't beat that!
9 :
Rent a car that way you won't be uncomfortable on the bus. Take 290 Highway all the way.
10 :
rental car will be cheapest
11 :
I had to take the Greyhound when I lost my license...it takes about 5 hours because of all the stops. The plus side is that you can sleep the whole time.
12 :
Austin is about 2.5 hours away from Houston. You can take 290 to the north and west of town, or I-10 west to 70, then 70 north to Austin. In the spring the 290 route is awfully pretty with the wildflowers, but highway 70 is always nice, too... if you like rolling countryside as far as the eye can see. Extra bonus on 290 is a stop in Brenham where the best ice cream in the country is made--Blue Bell. Definately take the drive, if you have the time. Bus service is available (go greyhound, you know) but you don't have the freedom to stop and smell the proverbial roses and it takes twice as long, assuming everything goes well. A plane ride is about 30 minutes point to point, but you have to fight the airports.
13 :
Taking the bus will save air pollution. Make sure you catch an express bus--that will take about 3 hours, as opposed to 5 for the local.
14 :
Man, rent a car like some have already suggested.
15 :
From 1960 & 290 to 290 & i35.. its 144 Miles. Im sure there is a bus service but I reccommed you drive it. Its a nice peaceful drive. Just make sure you dont forget to do the loopy thing right after Brenham, otherwise you will end up in Summerville.
16 :
Rent a car and drive it. It only takes about 2 1/2 hours to get there, and buses are scarey at best.
